Rattle Snake polebean, failed!!!

Finally glad to see this new forum, some have discussed it few weeks ago, and thanks Jim!

Now my rattle snakes produced like crazy, I was out there every morning before work picking handfuls, we had em to cook, freeze, and give away. Then the heat came, the rains stopped, and so did the beans.

What I dont understand is that last year, they made a 2nd, and 3rd crop just fine, also these are last years seeds.

Should I buy new seeds of this variety every year? What went wrong? Thanks Beaners!

I would apply a small amount of garden fertilizer and see if that will help. You should be able to save the seeds and plant from year to year. If the seeds weren't okay you wouldn't have gotten all you have already gotten. My beans almost drowned this year due to an abundance of rain here in South Carolina. Good luck--Dale

Rain in South Carolina. Don't you know we are in a moderate drought status. I will agree we had heavy rain when that tropical storm came through but other than that I have had to irrigate.
It wouldn't be the seeds. I suspect the plants were use to moderate temps and plenty of rain and when it turned hot and dry they just were not prepared. Nothing you could have done. That's mother nature. Mulching and watering could help. There is still time to plant for a september crop. I wouldn't think it would be a fertility problem. Beans grow very well in poor soils, too much fertilizer can give too much vine and little production. It could also be your problem, too much vine growth due to excess fertility with moderate temps and plenty of water will give lots of lush vines that just can't take the heat. Just some thoughts. I would diffently replant for fall. Rodger

Thanks Rodger! I see your point. Man I know this.....Im just kicking myself Ha Ha....I did plant some Royal Burgundys today, keeping the soil moist twice a day till they come up...Ive heard these have an awsome taste.

I ordered them from Pinetree Seads, those folks dont play.

I sent the form out....6 days later my seeds were in the mail box! Try em..and good gardening to ya!

I agree with Roger, probably mulch & cooler temps will have your Rattlesnakes back in the pink. If my memory serves me, you had _much_ more moisture last year (to put it mildly)! You could either replant for fall harvest, or pinch back the vines to encourage resprouting.

If I recall, Blane, you like the "beanier" tasting beans. You will probably like the Royal Burgundy.

Agree with you about Pinetree, got a lot of good seeds from them over the years. Very reasonable, and fast shipping.

My Rattlesnakes beans...the few that recovered from Japanese beetles...seemed to go dormant in the heat of the summer...they came back and flowered again once the weather cooled. I did plant new seed in August and got some "new" beans before the fall/freezed killed them.
