I hope somebody answers this for you... I planted some iris on Monday as the ground around here wasn't frozen yet, and I read that you can plant as long as the ground isn't frozen... we'll see if I get any results in the spring.

The problem with planting so late in your zone (and mine) is that they will not have a chance to root in, before the many times the ground will freeze and thaw during the remainder of the fall, and winter, and maybe even early spring.

I have a bag of small iris that was given to me that I didn't get anything done with, and now feel it is too late, especially since they are so small. I am going to store them in the cool basement and hope for the best. If they even retain any of the green and any moisture in the rhizome, I feel they will survive being planted next spring. I do think too that by doing this, I will have to wait an additional season before seeing them bloom. I was told they are a lot of really fancy expensive ones. They sure needed dividing badly because they are so small.

If you have just a few to plant and the ground isn't frozen, plant them and place a brick or large rock on the rhizome to keep the plant from heaving out during freeze/thaw cycles.
