Over several years of growing mainly Blue Lake bush beans, we've noticed they don't taste exactly the same from year-to-year. In fact one year, they tasted unusually flavorful and when they were cooking there was a nice fragrance. I carried some to work for dinner and the whole area where I used the microwave, smelled delicious. It has not happened anymore. Could it be the soil in that part of the garden, the moisture level, that particular batch of seed? We hope to sow a cover crop like winter rye, this fall. I wonder if increasing the organic content of the soil (ours tends toward sandy/mineral)would increase the flavor?
