Frozen in Packaging....

Hello I was at a big box store again today and saw that they still had many Irises available. The best part is that they were on clearance for 1.00. Unfortunately they'd left them outside and they've experienced freezing weather and now thawing. What are the chances that they're still alive? I fell in love with Music Maker but don't feel like buying a box of disappointment.

I'm guessing that they're probably dead in their little plastic boxes but figured I'd ask the experts here. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, even if they are still viable (which is a BIG question mark), there's a very strong probability that the rhizomes in the box aren't really Music Maker at all. "Mart" irises are notoriously misidentified.

If you really want Music Maker, wait until spring and order it from a reputable commercial iris grower. That way you'll receive a fresh, healthy plant that is guaranteed true to varietal name.

Laurie's advice is great. Is Music Maker the iris you fell in love with is the question. You looked at the photo on the package witch is lot more often wrong than the rhizome is.
    Description of:

    MUSIC MAKER
    Waters, R. 1961). Sdlg. GB-59. TB 36" M. B1M.
"Sky blue self, light beard. Muted Music X Regina Maria., Schreiners 1963

Sound like the iris you want?

Would it make any difference if it didn't come from Walmart but instead Menards?

Unfortunately the packaging doesn't give any details like you posted Mike G. And if the ID of them is to be questioned I guess I'm lucky I didn't buy them are regular price. They were originally something like 8 dollars for the box. If they live (whatever cultivar they are) I guess I wouldn't do so bad for a dollar. I've wasted more on things that aren't plants.

    Thanks for the info.

Mike G thanks for the time you've put into answering this post. But the "Music Maker" that site shows is not the one I'm talking about. The one I'm talking about look more like the "Night Game" on that site only blacker. I took a photo of the box and uploaded it to the gallery section. I realize in real life it may not look exactly like that as they probably use filters and color correction to make it look so dark.

My bet would be the argyle picture is the correct MM. Usually at least the box stores have them close to the same color as the registered one though.

You've got little to loose for a dollar. If the rhizome is still firm pot it up and give it a sunny window for the rest of the winter. If you can find one with a hint of green leaf that's better. Stressed like that the odds are very high it will take a year or two to bloom. Might suprise you though. I had clearance iris bloom in the house before.

    MBT,

There is only one iris legitimately registered by that name with the AIS, and it is the one for which Mike provided the sky blue description above. That's not to say that the iris you purchased from Menards might not turn out to be very lovely, but if it doesn't match Mike's description, it's NOT 'Music Maker'. Just grow it as an unknown iris and share it as such, if you're inclined. Do not label it with the incorrect name of 'Music Maker'.

    Dear MBT,

Welcome to the world of falling in love with an iris during the "off" season. It sure does stink, doesn't it? What a beautiful iris it is. You were meant to have it. If it doesn't bloom to expectations in spring, you are out $1.00. If you are disappointed, resolve to purchase it during the selling season (alas...one more year until the next bloom). It will be worth waiting for.

    Laurie,

    Thanks for the tip.

    Gardenfan,

So I guess you can relate huh? That picture is just stunning! It has to be the most beautiful flower I have ever seen. It is even infiltrating my dreams. I can imagine a whole garden just with that one flower. I wish I would have found it sooner I would have sent them to live with a gardener in a warmer area if they promised to send me one back. Oh well maybe I'll come across it again next year. Thanks.

    MBT, light bulb!

First, please accept my apologies for being slightly insensitive / ignorant of your climate zone. I can still plant in my zone. It gets cold, but rarely freezing. If the iris is still available, consider this idea: If you purchase & mail to me, I will "plant and hold" for you until the warmer season. Of course the condition of the rhizome may be unsalvagable, which is a risk you would need to take. If this idea interests you, feel free to email me.

    Janice,

Thanks for the offer. If I had thought about it sooner I would take you up on it. I ended up potting them up into containers and putting them in the cool attic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...the rhizomes are solid and not mushy. So many there is hope? In the spring I'll put them out in the garden. If it survives and is as nice as the pic I'll share one with you for offering to help.

BTW:No need to apologize you weren't out of line...

Ok, then. From all of us iris "underdogs" everywhere: please keep us all posted on the results. :)
