Wash and bleach the container thoroughly. Place the plant (roots) in a bowl of water that has a small amount of bleach mixed with plenty of water. Rinse. Cut off any obviously dead and mushy roots. You can also put some hydrogen peroxide in the plant water when you refill it. If your container holds about a cup of water, use a tsp. or so of the peroxide.

The water should be changed regularly to avoid the smelly, anaerobic conditions.
