A) Cut off the top just below the lowest "prong". Leave the foliage to die back naturally in the fall.

B) It's not really easy for the home gardener to plant lilies to stagger bloom. The professional cut flower growers have the niche using controlled greenhouse environment. You can purchase a different cultivar that blooms later though. Most of us here recommend L. speciosum rubrum (or alba, the white version) for bloom after the orientals, which is what Stargazer is. Most oriental lilies are quite fragrant. Trumpet lilies are also fragrant. They are easy to find, either in mail order catalogues or local stores that sell bulbs, usually in the spring but you might find some available in the fall.

Oriental 'Mona Lisa' will bloom earlier than other orientals, at the same time as asiatics.

I second Pardalinum's recommendation of Speciosum Rubrum. I interplanted Speciosum Rubrum in a bed of Stargazer. They are similar heights (so one doesn't obscure the other) and just as the Stargazer blooms were petering out the Rubrum started. Since they have similar coloring (Rubrum is one of the "parents" of Stargazer) they went very nicely together.

We were looking through catalogues together, and my 6 year old grandson picked out White Stargazer. We ordered it this spring, and they bloomed heavily. The fragrance was outstanding. Unfortunately everyone wanted to pick them to fragrance their rooms, and my grandson obliged, so I guess we will be buying more in the spring. They were beautiful.
