I am relatively new to lilies...

I have an order in from J&P for their Orienpet mix 8/16.95 (actually have a credit for the same amt., so they are free!) :0)

I have had some orientals and asiatics for a few years, and have just ordered 10 orientals from Buggycrazy....I'm so excited!

Now, my question:

I'd LOVE to order the Lilium Butterfly Mix (6 turks caps, many colors for $20), the Trumpet Lily Mix (12 lilies in four colors for $20.25) and the Strawberries and Cream Asiatic Lily Mix (25 white/cream/various shades of pink for $20), all from White Flower Farm. Does anyone here know how well their lilies grow and if they are prone to virus or not? (I am aware I shouldn't grow my tiger lilies near other lilies).

Also, never having grown the trumpets or turks caps, can anyone tell me if they would be nice in bouquets and if their scent is overpowering? I remember reading that some type of lily has an overpowering scent...I DON'T want that kind!!

Thanks so much for your input. Phyl

    Hiya Phyl,

All sound like great choices. Their lilies come from reliable growers and I've never had a problem with them. Plus, they're guaranteed, aren't they??

Trumpets are magnificent in the mid summer border and, once mature, can be spectacular specimens that'll just take your breath away. However, they are know to be powerfully scented along with the Orientals and the hybrids between the two called "Orienpets". The turk's cap types typically don't have a strong scent (most Asiatic hybrids do not possess a scent). I think they're lovely in bouquets, but some flower arrangers don't like working with them because the flowers are small and face down.

I hope that helps a bit. Those collections from WWF are excellent and a pretty good value!

    Happy Fall Lily Planting!

You will be pleased with the quality of bulbs from WFF. I have purchased from them a number of times and received big healthy lily bulbs. Some of them are from the West coast growers which I think is kinda funny for them to be shipped from the West coast to the East coast and back to me on the West coast lol:)

As for diseases, I have found the trumpet lilies to be the most disease resistant at least with respect to botrytus and virus. I think the secret to preventing virus infection is to control aphid problems very early on.

    Riz and Pardalinum,
Thanks for telling me about WFF. I am also looking into the Orienpets that The Bulb Crate is offering. Too bad there aren't many pictures out there of a few of the Orienpets they sell...the American series in particular. :0) Phyl

Here are some pictures of American Spirit, American Beginnings, and American Dream. I think Bulb Crate only has American Spirit but you'll get an idea of what they
look like. I didn't take a picture of American Heritage but it is a vibrant red with golden yellow wide edge

    BCGift,
WOW! LOVE the photos! Are #1 & #2 the SAME lily? They look the same, but you said #1 was American Spirit and #2 was American Beginnings? I've never heard of Amer. Beginnings. I love the green starburst especially. Do you need to stake all of these? Phyl

    Hi
    1 & 2 are not the same.
    1. American Spirit has a distinct red band that follows the shape of the petals. It had faded a bit by the time I took the photo.
    2. American Beginnings, the red spots are random.
I have these in part shade so I do have to stake them or they do the forward bend. Actually I put a stake behind each of my lily bulbs when planting, mostly to remind me that they're there and to avoid accidentally stabbing them.
