I have one lot growing in water, the plaited one is in soil and already 1 stem has died. It may be as it was in a cold drafty hall, now shifted to a warmer room.

Mine is in a glass vase with glass "pebbles" and water. I haven't done anything to it in the 6 months I've had it except add water when evaporation takes the level down. Love a plant that takes that kind of neglect and thrives! LOL I tend to baby my outside plants and ignore the ones inside so this has become one of my favorites.

I use water for all five of mine. The one at my office was going to be repotted in soil, but I changed my mind and moved it to a glass with pebbles. They seem to do so well in water, and I don't think I would know how often to water them in soil!

Dracaena sanderiana the common houseplant sold stripped of leaves called "Lucky Bamboo" would be much happier in potting soil.

If you are growing it in water, it doesn't care what substrate you use as long as you change the water often.

In soil one would water them as any other Dracaena, they are NOT an aquatic/bog plant.

barely moist during growing season and drier in winter.
