Growing under Lights

Hi!

I have a project in which we are trying to grow lettuce & onions under a light. We have a 1000W metal hallide about 3 1/2' above the canopy. The lettuces are doing pretty good, but the onions (green bunching, in 1 gallon pots) have begun to dry up, in a sense. The chutes are becoming papery and pale. We planted them as sets at the beginning of October and see very little bulb development. The timer is on for 16 hours/day. Does anyone have any experience growing onions under lights? Any help would be unbelievably appreciated!

Hi-I have some bunching onion 4 1/2 feet from a 600w MH bulb. They were planted Oct 28th. Lettuce and spinach is about the same distance away. I lost a couple of onions, they got droopy and brown, then fell over. The rest are growing well (there's about 20 of them crammed in a little shallow pot LOL). They are about 9" long now. Is your light too close? How is the temperature that close to such a strong bulb? My temp at the onions is about 70 degrees. This is my first time with the grow light, too.

Hm, i'll check. maybe i'm frying them.
