This doesn't look like a maple. Why don't you post it on the Trees forum?

Actually the seed pods look maple-like, but it's impossible to tell without a closer look at the leaf structure...better pictures?

Various evergreen maples with simple leaves occur in cultivation. There are even more kinds of oak trees with unlobed evergreen leaves in western gardens. Deciduous, lobed leaves are a more recent development for these trees, a response to cold climate conditions. In mild climates many of them still have the undivided evergreen leaves dominant in tropical forests, where there may be hundreds of different kinds of trees belonging to multiple plant families on a single plot - most of them with simple evergreen leaves.
