I have never dug lily bulbs except for dividing. They stay in the ground all-year round. Curious to hear from people in your zone as I am was not aware they needed to be dug. Is it different in southern areas?

As far as I know they don't "need" to be dug up. I did it because I wanted to winter them over in pots and give the one that was just now pushing up thru the soil a chance to make it thru the winter without being damaged. I also am not sure if I will move and I wanted to be able to take my babies with me. I was just asking about the differences so that when I plant them again in the spring I will have a better idea of what I am planting where. Also if I decide to trade (which I might as I have so many StarGazers and would love some new and interesting additions) I will be able to more accurately send the people I trade with the correct bulbs.

FWIW, Stargazers are Orientals whereas Centerfold is an Asiatic. Most if not all orientals have reddish purple looking bulbs, regardless of bloom color. Most asiatics have whitish bulbs. I just dug up a lot of many different colors and almost all of the asiatics had white bulbs. Centerfold is mostly white so those are probably the white bulbs you dug up. The one exception I found was Monte Negro, which is a deep orange red. I found the bulbs for this are also kind of an orange red.
