Generally, how well a JM retains red foliage throughout the growing season depends on specific location and siting. For example, even very well regarded red leaved JM's like Bloodgood can bronze out in summer if located in a more southerly climate and in full sun. In more northern climates and in only part sun, most tend to hold foliage color well.

Selection will depend on what growth habit you may prefer. Weeping laceleafs that retain good color include Inaba Shidare, Garnet, and Crimson Queen. Uprights include Bloodgood, Emperor I and Fireglow. I am rather partial to Fireglow myself - grows to a medium height, has a rich dark red during the growing season and turns a truly intense fire red with cool fall weather.

Siting any of these so they receive at least partial shade during the hottest part of the day should maintain good foliage color.

I've attached a link to one of the better Japanese maple sites. You might want to peruse the various listings to see exactly which redleaved cultivars you prefer. This grower is located in CA so accustomed to evaluating reliability of foliage color.

It's known for retaining its color without bronzing.
I can tell you my two are scarlet in August drought and heat.
LOVE them.
My Nigrum stays dark red, as does my Red Dragon, Crimson Queen, and Nurigasi.

I think the reds are better displayed with some orange or yellow Fall colors. To me , the contrast is more appealing.
