Do you mean English peas, snowpeas, snap peas or southern peas? All are relatively easy to grow. Of the Pisum group, shelling peas and sanp peas are the easiest. Major secret is getting them startied as early in the spring as possible. They also do not like an acidic soil, neutal Ph is best. Snow peas are a bit more finicky and less heat tolerant. Southern peas need heat, so they need to planted in warm weather ( late May thru June in your climate). They are very tolerant of soils.

What kind of pea is that in the second picture

Looks like Southern Peas, or cowpeas, also called black eyed peas in most of the rest of the world that does not know about the many varieties and colors of cowpeas from the South. But you can grow them in the north. I just grew Red Rippers this summer.

OP did not come back and tell what kind of peas they had trouble with. If it was the usual big green pea that Northerners are familiar with, (as in Farmerdilla's first picture) or the pea pods that go into stirfries, the secret is to plant them in the very early, still cold spring. They will be done before summer heat.
