Keebs and Webwolf used to post on some of the maple forums but I have not seen them in a while.

If grown in pots, you can transplant year-round as long as you remember to water in hot, dry weather. However, the best time to plant trees is generally during fall, winter or early spring, which gives them time to establish some new roots before weather warms up again. Worst time to transplant trees is during the heat of summer due to the stress of high temperatures and greater susceptibility to drought.
