This place has it on their web site.

Here is a link that might be useful: Acer truncatum SHANTUNG MAPLE

You might want to give these folks a email they show it in their catalogue but I have no idea what if any sizes or prices they have ...I have only recently ordered from them so I personally can't vouch for them but I had a good experience with them so far and they seem to be good folks AND their feed back at Dave's garden has been good ...but so has Forest farm's feedback has also been ok at Dave's but not as good ...my experience with FF was HORRIBLE and I can't recommend them...NO place has EVER treated me as badly ...so good luck with that...others have though had good experiences with them.maybe you'll have better luck than I did but they wouldn't be my first or even last choice ;>)..David

try www.soonerplantfarm.com. I get their stuff very quickly since they are only a few hours drive from here.

I get all mine locally including patented variety 'Fire Dragon' which is supposed to turn red every fall. I can't really tell you how they looked from Sooner though. Just the roses.

If you need to get it mail order then forest farm is great. They have a great selection of plants and they pack them very well. Customer service is good too.

However, shipping anywhere but the west coast is too expensive (or alternatively too slow) from them unless it's a hard to find item (and I don't want to order a truckload of plants to get it somewhere else).

Anyway, the straight species tree should not be hard to find at any good nursery, at least not where I live, which is hardly maple country. Two days ago I saw a dozen or so shantung maples at a local nursery in 5 gallon pots that were 7 or 8 feet tall for 35 bucks.

    Tcharles26,

Which nursery did you see shantung maple at?

milbergers had several (1604 & bulverde) not where the large trees are, by the rest shrubs near the landscaping stone. I beleive they were right next to the Japaanese Black pines.

I also saw some at Rainbow Gardens on Thousand oaks. They shouldn't be hard to fin in Texas. A&M declared it a Texas Superstar" and I think the general effect of that is that its widely grown and distributed.

I know that they are designated as Texas Superstar. I have three shantung including two 'Fire Dragon' which supposedly have consistent red fall leaves and 2 Caddo Maple which is hardy variant of sugar maple that can grow in limestone soil over here. I've never seen one at a nursery anywhere in Houston though. I've had to pick up a couple Shantung Maple 'Fire Dragon' from Metro Maples in Ft Worth before heading to houston to plant them at my mom's house because I just couldn't find SM there. I finally found Big Tooth maple but i guess too late. I ran out of room... unless one of trees happened to get killed somehow! :)

Thanks everyone. I got impatient and bought a Pacific Sunset Shantung hybrid locally. I live in southern Illinios. Can anyone tell me how it will do here?
