Japanese Maple

I purchased a Japaneese maple (Acer Palmatum Atropurpurea) about two years ago in the spring. The 2 ft tree was full of leaves and appeared to be doing fine. I recently had to replant due to zoning issues. I replanted during the begining of summer, and at that point the leaves had disappeared. It is now spring time again and there are no signs of leaves. My question is have I killed the tree by transplanting it?
