The green means that you do not have enough root system yet. Here in Texas in a dry spring even 12 foot Bloodgoods can leaf-out green when they are dry.

I thought crimson queen had to be grafted onto acer palmatum rootstalk to make another crimson queen. Did the piece you poked in the ground come from below the graft?

If you plant is a true Crimson Queen and the piece of wood broke off above the graft, it should leaf out red.

I will say that I highly doubt you will be able to root a 3" piece of wood by sticking it in the ground. It may leaf out, but it will soon die.

Twelve foot Bloodgoods do not leaf out green when they are dry wet or starving. They leaf out red. Any Bloodgood (or Crimson Queen)for that matter, will leaf out red. A seedling selection from a red leaved variety or an atropurpureum seedling can have variability or show green in the leaves, but even these primarily start out red or reddish and fade to green later in the season.

yes, what i stuck in the ground was above the graft. the leaves are green, and more have leafed out. it is growing also. i'll let you know what happens.
