After spending most of my years gardening in a protected urban garden in zone 6 off of Lake Erie in Cleveland Ohio, my 60 something year old bones have finally had enough of the snow and cold and decided to purchase a property in Charleston, South Carolina... I have been visiting for years and noticed a few palmatums here and there including the straight green species, Bloodgood, Sango Kaku, Virdis, and some other unknown red dissectums. Perhaps its me but aside from the straight green species and perhaps Bloodgood, many dont appear to attain the size or stature of some of those a bit further north in zones 6 and 7 or on the West Coast. Could anybody help me to identify appropriate Acer palmatums that would thrive in the Charleston area? Are there any more "unusual" varieties that can tolerate the heat besides the old standbys? Thank you for you help! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am so used to trying to find plants that will tolerate the cold that its not quite a switch to have to find plants that will tolerate the heat. N
