Japanese Maples

We are landscaping our front yard and would like to include a JM. We are at 5600 feet and in the northern portion of the High Sonoran Desert. The area we would like to place the maple would be north facing with the only shade coming for our single story house. We would like the maple to max out at 10 - 12 feet high. We like the red / crimson foliage. Any suggestions as to which, if any, Japanese Maple would grow will in this area. Thanks

There are maples listed both for sun and heat. Ideally, shade in afternoon (or the hottest part of the day) is strongly suggested in places where summer sun is intense and hot. And you will need to confirm that both your soil pH and irrigation water is not much in the way alkaline. JM's can tolerate neutral pH just fine but will not thrive if pH is very high.

Most red leaved maples can tolerate a lot of sun. Be aware that strong sun can cause them to lose some color or 'green out'. Those with very pale green or gold foliage, the reticulateds and any variegated forms will not be happy in anything other than afternoon shade. The standard green leaf varieties are fine.
