Arrrrggghhhhh.... what is it with people and exotic pests?? *sigh* I remember last years snakehead problem here in Crofton, I wonder how many aquatic lives had to be killed because of that dumb fish. Drives me nuts.

I saw that!!! Wow, that's scary to think there may be more out there lurking from the deep. What an evil looking fish.

I saw the picture of it in the paper this morning, that is one nasty-looking fish.

I saw small snakeheads for sale in a Virginia international food market. They may be illegal in MD, but easy to find across the river!

Well the good news is that only one female was found and she had not spawned yet, though she was getting ready to. I heard that all the other fish were transferred to other ponds, lakes etc in the state.

I heard on the news last night that the bill in Maryland did not pass. I wonder if that is true or not.

I wonder if we could train the snakeheads to eat the cicadas?

- Snake heads are great in a fish market, and could have good commercial potential as a regulated farmed fish, but it seems we just can't trust folk to keep potentially invasive species as pets. (And maybe not even as a farmed fish - remember how the nutria problem started?) Exotic pets keep being "freed," where they either don't do well (which is no favor to the abandoned pet) or they DO do well, which, as an environmental disaster, is worse.
- Then again, how different is this from us gardeners who keep bringing lovely and delicious plants in to fill our gardens, and then discover that some of our happiest plants decide to become naturalized American immegrants? Controling exotics, whether plants or insects, accounts for a big part of the expence of keeping up my farm.
- So catch those snake heads, grate some fresh ginger, gather some flat-leaved garlic chives, and saute with a splash of sweet rice wine and some kaffir lime leaves or bitter orange.
- Does anyone remember the Monty Python solution to exotics? Introducing giant electric tenticled penguins to controle the giant kitty catsa introduced to exterminate the preditory, carniverous imported automobiles?
