Repotting Maples

I have not had any of my collection long enough to have to re pot yet but would welcome any advice on techniques employed in this task.I would think that some of my rootballs will be quite cumbersome and heavy by the time I have to re pot and would like to know how to complete this task with the minimum of damage.

I have ensured that all of my collection is housed in containers which are basically vase shaped so that withdrawning the rootball should be as easy as is possible.

Looking at sites, magazines etc I see many examples of maples that are planted in rounded containers from which I imagine withdrawing the rootball without causing damage to it must be well nigh impossible. In this case is it one of trash the container or trash the plant ?
