Hey Dollmaker, what a good idea! But I have to say that in the 18 yrs that I've been gardening in this spot I've never had a major problem with slugs (knock on wood) Oh I do have them slime/chew things on occasion, but nothing to excess. My boyfriend has used diatomacous earth before (they were chowing on his head lettuce) with good results.

I save all my egg shells during the winter in coffee cans and sprinkle the crushed shells around plants.

I have avoided the sharp things because I like to let my kitties sleep under the big hostas. But I understand they work very well! Does the seaweed also fertilize?

yes the rich source of nitrogen is great amoung other nutrients. My garden loves it. especially my pataotes.

I heard form a 75 year old gardener that she once heard of using seaweed under the patatoes as a base and then till up on top with garden soil as you normally would. She said the patatoes would be the whitest you ever saw?! Not sure what that means, I expect she only grows white patatoes as I go blue, red, etc...

However the results are beneficial to the garden all around.
