Air layering?

I have a JM,bought from Wayside many years ago and tag long since gone. It's green w/ very thin line of red edging the leaves.....but it has one nice size side limb that is what I guess you'd call a witch's broom that is green on green varigated and leaves seem much more closely spaced. I'd like to remove to grow on it's own but don't trust myself to get it to live just by loping it off and trying to get it to root. Can a JM be successfully air-layered?
