Likely winter kill I sound like a broken record or the spring freeze ...the top will grow out it looks like to me . although i don't like the trunk coloration, I see no black psuedonomous on it so that is good...if the sap flow is good the top should grow out with time ...but i doubt if any of the top not now leafed is alive and at some point you will have to. trim it off and leave only the leafed parts and associated branches...if you are sure it's dead you can do that any time now ...as far as the trunk sprouts you have a high grafted red dissectum and any growth on the trunk is generic green root stock basically worthless and worse it will sap the energy needed to grow the grafted dissectum top back so snap those puppies off NOW...it's pretty easy to tell which is which ;>) David
