I do garlic every year.

One of the advantages of growing your own is the bulbs can adapt to your garden. Next summer (July) when you harvest your garlic heads, save the biggest cloves from each of them and set aside in a cool dark place until fall. Each year plant only the largest cloves and your heads of garlic will grow bigger every year.

Ohhh that sounds awesome, I can't wait!! This is my first year with garlic, I already planted enough to feed the town of Caratunk for the next year if it all comes up!

Hello,do you think I could grow garlic from the cloves one buys at the supermarket produce department? Josie

Josie, yes but 1)they may not amount to much in size; and 2)they may not be winter hardy. The varieties found in the supermarket are usually grown in California, or some other warm place, and are not varieties that are winter hardy or adapted to our climate.

Because I didn't want to pay the exhorbitant prices of mailorder garlic, I buy heads of garlic at our farmer's market. The garlic is grown locally so I know it will do well in Maine. I plant only the outside, larger cloves.

What do you do for mulch? I used composted manure enriched soil for planting and then mulched with leaves...I planned on top dressing in the spring with more manure (composted).

That would be great, manfarr. I have mulched with composted manure, compost, always shredded leaves on top.
