Its hard to tell what you've got here. We need a shot a little farther back so we can see what is happening with the whole tree. See where the graft is and which branches are coming out where.

I think the green leaves with the red margins look pretty cool!

You've probably got a branch coming from below the graft that is accounting for the green leaves, but it's hard to tell for sure from the photos.

Here are more photos of the stem and the whole tree. You'll see that the understory (stock) is lower than the graft (red)

Yes, it looks like the understock has sprouted and been allowed to grow. You can prune it off or have a two-tone tree!

Tony, your gonna want to cut those green limbs off! Better now than later. I would use a small, very sharp tree saw as aposed to 3/4 snips.That way you could stay close to the main trunk.I would also cut some first from the bottom up,then from up cutting down to prevent tearing,while taking your time and let the saw cut without much force.A nice smooth cut will heal a lot better than a rushed hack job! AL -- that sounds like the consensus. I won't cut away until late winter, maybe sometime in January 2009. That sound about right? Or is just after the tree goes dormant a better time?

Vertrees suggests late autumn to mid winter. In general you want the wound to have enough time to seal up so it won't bleed when the sap starts running up the trunk in the spring.
