i have no trouble selling elephant garlic at the farmers market.

Interesting question. I think it depends on a few things.

If you're selling garlic for planting, a pound of huge garlic will have far fewer cloves to plant than a pound of smaller heads. Customers may be disappointed to get fewer plants than expected. I think for seed, medium-large is a good bet.

As for people buying garlic to eat, usually anything over $2/ head is gonna make people think twice. But if it's big and beautiful, some folks will go for it no problem.
Overall, my eating garlic sells best if I have various sizes to choose from, and especially if I sell by the each. But that does take a bunch of extra time to grade it.

Usually spacing the planting at about 6"x6" gives me a nice variation in harvested garlic size. If you're only growing jumbo garlic, you could narrow down your spacing on some of it to favor some smaller heads.

Randy: I don't know what it is about Elephant Garlic,but mine sold out the 2nd day.

Mark: I have to agree with you about having smaller bulbs available. even though its just as much work to plant harvest and clean, gaining a valuable customer is priceless.
Next year I'll have to plant at 4" spacing.I'll have to plant in a smaller area due to the fact that I was not able to prepare enough ground for rotational planting.
