what's wrong with my maple

I've got a maple that's been doing fine in a (large) pot in very sheltered spot. In last week the leaves are shrivelling up and not looking happy. Maybe I've done something wrong - now weather has warmed up I've been watering. Have I under/overwatered? I've also given a liquid feed just once, maybe it didn't like that.

I have not repotted this year (I did last year) but did scrape quite a bit of compost off the top and put fresh compost on instead. Any suggestions???

ps
The maple looks very much like the one in the pic on the front of this maple site (purple leaves).
I'm in UK, in a 'mild' weather area (midlands). I'm pretty sure this is not frost damage. I took it inside during frost anyway but sure it would have been ok outside anyway.

My crimson maple has suckers growing all over the bottom of it, almost like a crown. Should I cut them off? Also there are two branches at the top that look dead.Other then that the tree looks very healthy.
