Need Help: 2 New Japanese Maple's

I planted two Japanese Maple's 3-4 Months ago. They seemed to be doing OK until recently. One is planted in the middle of a grass area and the other in a non-grass area. I live in the Northern CA and the trees get morning shade and sun/heat for the entire afternoon. Temps range from 70-100 and there are often winds in the afternoon.

Both have different symptoms:

1. The tree in the grass is losing leaves and they are curling and drying up, but doesn't seem to have any burn marks.

2. The other tree's leaves seem to be be burning and curling and eventually falling off.

Well I know for sure they aren't liking the afternoon sun or the wind. And from looking at the pic that's not a small tree... Might have some damaged roots from transplant. It being so hot; we are in the middle of a drought here in Arkansas and reached 105F today. As for one dropping leaves and one not, not a clue... I'm a beginner in growing JMs as well.

Yes - water, water, water!! Newly planted trees will need frequent, deep watering - like from a soaker hose or drip system, not from an inground irrigation system.

btw, the morning shade/afternoon sun situation is exactly the opposite of the type of siting they prefer. You may be dealing with scorched foliage on an ongoing basis, especially with the light colored foliage of the Sango Kaku. JM's can actually tolerate a good deal of wind without issue, provided they get enough water to offset the desiccation the wind creates.
