Pulpy material in side branch

A storm recently broke a branch on a tree in my front yard. while cleaning it up i noticed that the base of where the branch broke had a pulpy center that was very moist. it didnt look to much like termites had done it. I could literally reach in and pull fist fulls of this stuff out. I dont know if it was rot or what but is definatly was the reason that the branch broke. what is this and what causes it and what can I do to fix it.

It's rot from a wound which occurred years ago.

Leave it be. Don't clean it out, don't fill it, and don't try to seal it.

thanks for the advice. i feel a little better, i thought that it would be something worse like a parasite or something.

since the branch broke at the point where the rot was and now its just a broken branch should I saw it back a little bit to completely remove the branch at the crotch. that would get rid of all the rot. Or will it eventually heal and go away?
