Repotting Maples

Hi,

I have a some Japanese Maples in 3 gallon containers that I need to repot in fall. They have been in these containers for over a year now. Should I completely remove all the old soil from the roots when I repot (maybe even wash the roots with water) and put them in the new soil and larger containers, or keep the old soil and add the new soil to it?

Any information appreciated.

thanks,

xman
