i need some help.. we have'd a tamukeyama for going on 3 years and something bad has happened to it. It's 98% dead.. i thought the spring frost killed it, but way down the bottom of the truck we have a few leaves growing. THe who top is dead dead (no green stems when you scratch any). Should I hard prune to just above the new growth?

If you know it's dead, then yes. Prune back to where you know the tree is alive.

yeah, I'm pretty certain the top branches are all dead.. the are still red but they snap off when you break one.. thanks for the tip.. I think I will do the deed tomorrow

Is it in a proper location? That is likely the root of the problem. You may want to move it now to a more sheltered area.
