Maturation of sugar maple

Twenty-some years ago we planted a sugar maple sprout from a beautiful mother tree which was found over toward Lake of the Ozarks. It is a healthy tree & getting plenty tall, but we're beginning to wonder when it will develop a canopy, as opposed to branches still growing all the way to the ground. We aren't terribly knowledgeable about trees, but are aware that they grow from the top, so when and how is the bare trunk going to ever happen?
