Need plant suggestions to provide screening

I need your suggestions. The neighbors tore down their house and are building the new one closer to the shared property line.

I want to get some bushy shrubs (non-suckering) and smaller trees planted to provide some screening. Not sure yet if it will be 1 or 2 stories tall.

The area is on the north side of my house. Shady though it gets some evening sun. Dry, with competition from an elm and maple. (I'm willing to water for the first few years only to help them get established.) Heavy soil.

What comes to mind as possibly suitable? (I have a strong preference for native plants.)

Hey there Leaves-
I can help you find a few wild growing cedar type arborvitae near my place.....
I have one that has naturalized in a pretty shady spot in my yard you are welcome to....
I would also try some elderberries- nanyberries- amalancher- black currants- all can do well with lower light- and will usually hold their own.

Hi, Julie. Thanks for the offer! Do you know how tall & wide the arborvitae will get? I like the idea of some evergreen plants in that area...

I have all the other plants already somewhere in the yard, except the elderberry, that might be a nice addition. Oh, and the black currant--will have to look that one up, too.

Any one growing white hawthorn? That one came up in a plant search and it sounds interesting.
