Squishy? Wow, where are you located?

My ground is still frozen solid and covered with snow. Couldn't move anything even if I wanted to!

I think it's a little too early, yet.

Thanks Linda. I'm located in downtown Chaska. I was walking in my garden yesterday and my feet were sinking in the mud. My yard is almost completely free of snow at this point, but I notice my neighbor across the street still has plenty of snow. Maybe it's because my house faces south?

Anyway, I think I'll wait a while to move anything.

It's usually not good to work with the soil when it is squishy :) when it dries it could get really hard and clumpy. Also, it may not be drying out very well because there is still frost in the ground a few inches under that squishy top layer. When the frost goes out it should dry out.
Moisture test I've always heard of is to take a clump of soil in your hand and drop it from about 4 feet. If it breaks apart when it hits the ground the soil is the right moisture to work with.
My DH tilled my veggie garden too early one year and it was horribly hard and clumpy when I went to plant. Now I have him trained (hee hee) to do the "drop test" before tilling and haven't had any problems yet.
