Beni Kawa problems

I planted this Beni Kawa late last fall. This is the first summer in the yard and the leaves are not looking too great. It gets full sun until around 2 in the afternoon. Many leaves have much red, not just the new ones and it also had a lot of twig dieback. The soil is very hard clay but I did try to encircle the root ball with good draining soil and the yard does slope away from it. Please see the pics in the gallery. Any thoughts?
