If you're concerned about the red leaves, they're normal new growth. The brown tips on the leaves could be fertilizer burn coupled with a lack of water. Rainfall is usually not enough for plants in pots.
I'd plant the tree in the ground and not fertilize it anymore.
Growing Japanese maples in a pot is a bit difficult for newer gardeners.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate all of your info. I still would like to try jm in containters. You have to start somewhere right?

Also the soil condition of where is would like this maple to go is not the greatest. Its all clay and very wet area. I keep the pot up on a peice of slate to keep it away from the ground. Also I would like to take it with me if I ever move.
