protrusions on maple leaves.

Visiting my mom in Iowa, and one of her maples has something seriously wrong, we believe. The leaves are covered with finger-like protrusions on the top side - there are maybe 50-100 on every leaf. They protrude up about 1/4 of an inch and are very thin. We've researched online and found nothing that seems to fit. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I believe you have encountered the Maple Gall Mite, "Vasates quadripedes." Although ugly, they are common and do little harm. The link below may be helpful. Do web searches for "Maple Gall Mite" and for "Vasates quadripedes" to find even more info.

Many of my trees have them too.
