I planted 4 tomato plants several weeks ago. I listened out for frost and covered them with newspaper teepees. I'm hoping for some early tomatoes :)

I planted 3 in wall-o-waters on April 1. They're still alive. We had 31 degress a few nights ago and 34 night before last, but it may be low 40s or higher from here on in.

I've had trays of flower and perennial seedlings outside for about 2 weeks now (no more room indoors), covered with Reemay most nights. The only things that really didn't like it are moonflower, Mina lobata, and hibiscus. They went back inside.

My 'maters are going out in the coldframe and under the plastic "greenhouse umbrellas" this weekend.

carolinacurl, what is a newspaper teepee? Last year, I put mine out early using water-filled milk cartons as a poor man's WOW. Worked great. But we never had a frost in April last year even though the average last is not for another week or two. I posed this same question in the Virginia forum and the ensuing discussion focused on soil temperature rather than air temp and suggested that fruits from a tomato planted too early will not taste as good as from plants that go in later.

Always so much to learn in gardening....

Heirlooms went into the ground yesterday, protected by the water-filled milk cartons.
