vermiculite is hard to find, I have been looking for it too. I found a 8 quart bag of Hoffman vermiculite at, "our own hardware store". I think I payed about $8.00 for it there,don't know if you are near a our own hardware,and if that is a big enough bag, but you could ask if there is a bigger bag they could get for you..hope that will help you..

Do they still use coarse vermiculite for insulation? Maybe try a Home Depot or the like.

Leftwood, I didn't know they used it for insulation! I read somewhere not long ago that HD has it in big bags, but I was impatiently waiting for their garden center to open up. Now I feel kinda dumb for not thinking outside the ol' garden box. Thanks for the tip!

Is the house insulation stuff the same as what garden stores carry? I would want to get some assurance that it's safe for other uses. Not sure what you intend for it though--hypertufa?

All I can say is that we have been using the house insulation vermiculite for probably 25+ years, incorporated in hypertufa. If you are worried about asbestos contamination, make sure the source of the mica is not Minnesota/Wisconsin. Vermiculite (puffed mica) from western states is supposed to be asbestos free.
