I do not know where you would get free compost but you can get free mulch at the Allender Rd landfill. They have ground this material up so fine if you put it in a pile for a year it will pretty well be compost by next season. You have to load it yourself unless you can get the operator there to load it for you.Steve in Baltimore County

I'm too far (Carroll/Frederick county line), but I'd bet if you contact other horse stables they'd be happy to get rid of old horse manure. It might not be fully aged tho, so look around or be prepared to wait or amend it w/some lime... You can use the yellow pages under horseback riding stables, or try this link

There is a place on Marriottsville Rd in Baltimore Co. which usually has a sign out for free horse poo. I don't know how well aged it is. I think it's called Lady of the Fields. I'll be driving past there this weekend and will let you know for sure.

I don't know if it's an optionfor you, and it's been years since I've had a garden big enough to do it, but if the circus comes to town in your area we used to get elephant manure for our compost piles :)

Ringling Bros was only too happy to share. The circus was still playing at the DC Armory back then. I'm not sure where they are now. They usually play Washington DC in March.

I got some compost today for $7/yard over in Havre De Grace. It's from the city and it looked good to me. It does have some chunks of wood but over all it looks, feels and smells like really black dirt.

I'm going again on Friday to get a couple more yards of it.

You can get it from the recycling center off of northern parkway in baltimore city. You have to call the city first and ok it with them because not many people get it this way. They have mulch too there. Not great looking stuff, but it's free.
