japanese maple

My tree, which is in a large container on the roof, was getting very dried up, frizzled ends on the leaves. There's very little shade on the roof, but I moved it to the only spot where it gets a little, and I try to protect it on the hottest, sunniest days, am watering more. Now I see very tiny, bright red leaves emerging from the branches. This is on a beautiful, maroon tree. Are they going to get darker, or does the amount of sun determine the shade of the leaves? I mean, it's fiery red- and they seem to be staying really tiny- what should I do?

Thanks,

Genata
