How large-growing? What kind of soil conditions? On the whole maples tend to like it moist, would you be open to another kind of tree if your site is too hot or dry to be optimal for maples?

Mountain Maples has a list of cold hardy maples and their spring, summer, & fall colors. Looks like you are kinda limited with the palmatums, maybe try an Acer Japonicum variety.

Unlikely to enjoy a south-facing wall in Zone 4.
