Tamukeyama

Hi everyone, I've always been a bit afraid of J. maples (and it didn't help I killed 3-4 in ignorance first attempt).. I have 2 now, still in containers and transferred up carefully as needed. I'm afraid to overwinter in container again (lead to demise of others)..

One is probably common enough, it's the Acer dissectum Tamukeyama, maybe it's meant to be tall and narrow (grafted high?, is that possible) as it's growing upright, maybe over 2 feet tall now with no signs yet of wanting to branch out and get "long" like other maples.. I do have it lightly staked still. I like the long lean look, maybe it's mislabled. Anyone, I read part shade for the dissectums due to fragile leaves, and wind protection? But I see people growing them in all kinds of areas, maybe if it's older? My shade spots right now are limited.

I also hear they hate clay, I can find decent enough soil, and obviously good drainage. What about this wind protection thing? I worry b/c it's roots are still smaller and trunk thinner than I'd want, afraid of some horrible winter animal killing it. Also, I hear about possible sunburn to bark? Is there way to prevent, a wrap? I don't want to trap moisture against trunk and hurt it.

How many of you grow in containers until they look more robust?

I worry too much?

Amy
