Any meconopsis is a difficult alpine plant for Minnesota. Our climate is contradicting in several ways. As a member of the Minnesota chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society for 20 years, I know several people who have tried cultivating blue poppies, a few who were successful for a few years, and only one or two that actually got it to flower.

If you're in for a REAL challenge, go for it. But don't get your hopes up.

It takes a cool-summer area to keep them alive; you might be a bit too hot up there, but they would probably do better than in the southern half of the state where they tend to melt away quickly. Along the shore of Lake Superior there is probably quite a bit of decent property for trying blue poppies and their other high-altitude kin, though.

For what it's worth, smith and hawken sells the plants 3//$34. I've never ordered plants from them. I've read elsewhere though that the first year you need to pinch off the buds before they bloom so that (maybe) they'll bloom the next year. It all sounds too heartbreaking to me.

I've also read that they're only really viable in a place with cold nights. If it stays like this you might be in business!
