This tree turns a dark red/purple during the fall. There are at least 3 of these roots in my path. The trunk circumference is roughly 40 inches around.

I'd say yes from the limited info given.
It's hard to kill a Norway Maple and at 40" in dia., 3 small roots won't make much of a difference. I would go back as far as practical when cutting the roots so they won't be a problem for a few years at least.

That's what I was hoping for. I did a lot of trenching around the roots to see where they went and how many rootlets they had spawned. Hopefully because it is late in the season, the winter will not cause it further distress.
