Update: I found a similar plant this morning at the Arlington Farmer's Market. It's labeled Cuphea purpurea 'Firecracker', and it much lankier than Cuphea llavea 'Tiny Mice', but the flowers look very similar.

I haven't seen this around here, but use to grow Cuphea llavea 'batface' in S. Carolina as a perennial and loved it and now miss it. Is it an annual here?

I didn't realize it was perennial as far north as South Carolina! :-) Thought it was a much more tropical thing. As far as I know, it won't survive the winter outdoors here. At least mine haven't, but I've always planted them in containers. I bought 2 similar plants last Saturday at the Arlington Farmer's Market. Maybe I should plant one in the ground this year, mulch it heavily over the winter and see what happens....

I saw Cuphea at the Baltimore City Farmers Market. It may have even been 'Tiny Mice'.

I think I got the last one at Cox Farm back in April. Found it nestled among some other plants where it probably shouldn't have been. Perhaps someone had hidden it, planning on returning for it. :)

Anyway, last year they had Candy Corn Vine (Manettia) and I was looking for it at the time.

I ordered seven different Cupheas this year from Singing Springs Nursery, and started 3 others from seed (Thompson & Morgan). I think I've accidentally become a Cuphea collector. The hummingbirds really appreciate them. :-)
