Picture this!

My little flat of Virgina Bluebells fell off the shelf last night! On it's head no less! I don't know what I did... I was watering, and suddenly, PLOP! Now, these guys were planted about a month ago, and they came up within a few days, but I've found that Bluebells don't grow too awfully fast. They average 1/4 to 1/2 inch in height. Picture me down on hands and knees for nearly an hour, picking up tiny little bluebells and planting them back in their flat! They have great root systems though, about twice as long as the plant is high! And today, they look like they've always been planted right where they are! A disaster averted!!

Good thing that the flat fell when you were there. I knocked over a couple of my jugs the other night outside with the hose when watering. Was lucky that not a whole lot of dirt fell out so I just put it back in. I noticed tonight I had real little sprouts or should say specks of green in one of the fallen jugs, so I was lucky too.

Maybe something will still come of it...

Oh oh... hope I didn't jinx you guys! The bluebells look like they've survived just fine. It's been three days now and I did lose some, but 2/3's of them are still looking good and even seem to be growing some! Maybe those that were tough enough to survive actually LIKED it :-)

Where did you buy your flat of virginia bluebells? I have some growing in my front garden, and just love the looks of them growing in with the ferns. Such a beautiful spring time garden, but I'd love to have more bluebells! Thanks.

Hi Chris, I wish I could point you in the direction of a good nursery for buying Virginial Bluebells, but I can't. Some time back, I posted on GW, asking if anyone knew a good source. A very NICE man from Tennesee emailed me and said he's seen my post and he had extra seed and asked if I'd like some. I sent him my address, and a week later had a big fat envelope with virginia bluebell seed, blue morning glory seed, and hollyhock seed from hollyhocks that his mother had been growing for 35+ years, along with a photo tour of his gardens in Tennesee. What a great person and a very enjoyable experience.

They have been easy to start from seed though. I started the one flat indoors, and a Winterseeded a second batch. Both had good germination and are looking great. I'm going to put one more big batch into an outdoor germination bed as well. You might just try saving some seed from yours this fall.

Try Landscape Alternatives here in Saint Paul :) I also happen to know that they will be expanding as they bought the old Fox Tail Farms which is a "moreganic" CSA I work at in summer (they've relocated to a larger spot just across the river)

I also believe that the Friend's Plant Sale will have them - May 6-8 at the State Fairgrounds.
