Looks to be a Japanese maple of some sort, Acer palmatum. Virtually impossible to distinguish exact cultivars if indeed a grafted and not seed-grown tree.

Looks like Acer palmatum. As to which cultivar, that would be tough to determine.

Its about 10 ft wide by about 10ft tall.

Looking for a tree for my front yard, thought about transplanting this one but was also looking at a tulip tree, redhorsechestnut or river birch.

Area is about 30 feet wife, and would like to keep the height to about 40 feet max. Its a southern exposure, so sun all day long. well irrigated soil, just dont know the ph level. I live on Long Island, NY.

Japanese maples are not necessarily the easiest tree to transplant. Nor are they the most difficult. You want to wait to do so when the tree is fully dormant (no leaves) and to take the largest rootball you can manage. With a tree of that size, we are talking a pretty darn big rootball! And there are issues of transplating a mature, established tree that one does not encounter when planting new stock. While JM's are great trees in many cases, they are not necessarily the answer to everything and I'd seriously consider the advantages/disadvantages of moving one of that size versus just starting fresh.

There is a huge range in sizes of Japanese maples depending on type. Some seldom get larger than a few feet, others can get as large as 25-30 feet (possibly more) and as wide. It is impossible to know how large the tree in question is likely to get without knowing its specifics.
