The only place I know of for sure where you can get them in flats is Seed Saver's Exchange just outside Dubuque, Iowa. It is difficult to find sylvestris in anything but seed packets.

I just picked up a small flat last Sunday. I'll check back to see if you were able to find some. If not, I could hold a couple seedings back for you. I'm going to the Como Park June plant swap. We could pre-arrange a swap. Carmellia

I also have many nicotiana seedlings- but that's the rub- they are mixed with 2 others- you are welcome to some- I am going to the swap as well-
Look for these seeds in Parks- Thompson Morgan- Select Seeds and Seymore seeds catalogs. A google search turned up Chiltern's- Van Dusen- Victory seeds to name a few-

There's a small greenhouse in Roseville that has previously carried big N. sylvestris in pots that bloomed in no time. This is a wonderful little place for annuals, but I can never remember their name...Marv H? Anyway, they don't have 'em this year. Maybe Highland Park Nursery?

Yes, Sylvestris at highland nursery and also Langsdorfi(sp?) which is light green and soo cute. I also ordered "mutabilis" last year very pretty with tons of hovering pink fairy flowers at about 3ft tall...

I saw ( and bought ) Sylvestris at Tangletown gardens today. Has anyone who has grown these had aphid problems? One year mine were almost black with aphids when I woke up one morning..

yup! aphids like crazy when I grew it too.

Yeah, aphids love 'em, and not just the black ones - mine were green. I just periodically washed them off into the lawn with a hard spray of water.

Thanks for all the tips! Highland ran out last week, but I did finally find both sylvestris and langsdorfii at Tangletown. Aphids, come-and-get-it.

I don't mean to doubt any of you. I'm sure you know what an aphid looks like. When it was mentioned that the plant was thick with green aphids I pictured my plants thick with white flies. Nicotiana is a great companion plant to tomato because the plant attracts white flies and the leaves trap them. I dont' remember ever having aphids on mine. Carmellia
